Carolyn Grandis Honored with JCFR L’ Dor V’or/Woman of Valor

Carolyn Grandis, who has been an active  volunteer for the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond for the last 50 years, was honored with the annual L’Dor V’dor/Woman of Valor Award on Nov. 19.

More than 75 people attended the luncheon, including many of her family members.  It  was hosted by the Women’s Division of the 2016 Annual Campaign at the Weinstein JCC.

Barbara Kiken, Women’s Division chair, welcomed everyone to the gathering. “Thank you all for coming to pay tribute to our Woman of Valor, Carolyn Grandis. We are excited to once again bring together so many dedicated women to celebrate the good work of the Federation and today’s honoree. I want to thank Sandy Sisisky and Hedy Lapkin for chairing this lovely event.”

Susan Grandis, daughter of Carolyn, offered remarks praising her mother’s long history of volunteerism and dedication to the Jewish community.  On behalf of the Federation, she presented her mother with the gift of Shabbat candlesticks.

The guest speakers at the event were Yaron Gamburg and Nir Evron. Gamburg, counselor for Academic and Public Affairs, Embassy of Israel, is a career diplomat who joined the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1999. Gamburg brought greetings from the Israeli Embassy and an update on the situation in Israel.

Evron, who lives in Israel, is the Artist in Residence during the Fall 2015 semester in partnership with VCU’s acclaimed School of the Arts. He told the group about the upcoming exhibit of his works in Richmond.  He is recipient of the Miron Sima Prize for Visual Arts, a biannual prize awarded to Israel artists. Since 2007, he has been a professor of photography at Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem.

Grandis has received several honors through the years. She received the W.H. Schwarzschild Award for Outstanding Campaign Worker, Women’s Division, in 1988 and 2015, and has been a Lion of Judah for many years.

In thanking the Women’s Divison for the honor, she noted, “As a volunteer worker for the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond for the last 50 years, I have known and worked with all of the 23 women who have received the L’Dor V’Dor award before me. In the past, each of these women gave their time and best effort to raise money for the Campaign so the Federation could continue to help Jews in Richmond, in our country, in Israel and in the world to have a better Jewish life.”
