This is style of celebration, sometimes dubbed a “Freedom Shabbat,” celebrates the legacy of Juneteenth by bridging Jewish tradition with the shared pursuit of liberation. The evening begins with a musical pre-Shabbat gathering, followed by a very traditional Kabbalat Shabbat service woven with African American-inspired niggunim (wordless melodies). We conclude with a unique culinary experience featuring a kosher soul food menu that honors the rich heritage of the African American community. By acknowledging our intertwined histories through music and food, this gathering strengthens the bonds between Jews of Color, the wider congregation, and our interfaith community.
