The American Revolution was unprecedented in the annals of history. Above all, the Founding Fathers of the nascent Republic were extraordinarily committed to religious freedom. Three future Presidents from Virginia were instrumental - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison - in enshrining this right in America's founding documents and overall ethos. This lecture would provide an overview of key people, documents, and events, including the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (which is celebrating its 240th birthday this year); Washington's famous letters to Jews and Christians (including in Richmond); Article VI (which prohibits any religious test for federal office); and the First Amendment of 1791, which guaranteed that Congress would not establish a national religion or prohibit the free exercise of religion by any of America's citizens.
